Review: The Girls by Emily Cline

On August 13, 2016 I finished the book The Girls by Emma Cline.

I wanted to like this book, I waited months for it to be released because everyone was talking about how great the book was.

I am very disappointed with this book. The whole thing put me in a bad mood. It was overwritten, some of the ways the author tried to describe things just really didn’t make sense. None of the characters were relatable to me, the only part I could relate to was the feeling of being alone as a teenager, over dramatizing everything. In my opinion, none of the characters had any likable qualities, even the adults annoyed me. Everyone came across as whiny and needed.

I had to force myself to finish this, hoping that it would get better but it didn’t. I’ve never read a book that made me feel so emotionally detached.

The book features a lot of sexual content, rape, and drug use. You have to remember that the main character is only 14 which just makes me feel sick.

The story could be believable, cults prey on the weak, the ones who are desperate to be loved that they don’t care what you do to them, that as long as you show them a sliver of attention they are on cloud nine.

I can see why people would like this book, the story line is interesting and I do like the concept of the story. I believe that this book could have been better written. I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone.

All my reviews can be found on Amazon, Goodreads, and LibraryThing
